Breakin in my Dekka

It took me a while but now I really like my Dekka and I am riding it well. Until..... I headed off to Gisborne for a cold, clear, frosty Queen's Birthday weekend. The surf was clean and big. Day 2 and I dragged the family down to the beach at Centres. Brett turned up to slash and burn and I tried to match him. Sliding back into a potential barrel I got slammed. Bang, nothing holding me to the board. Stayed with it and looked down in horror at the gaping hole where my quad centre anchor had been. Nice clean soggy polystyrene looked back. I limped back to shore and grabbed my surfboard as the surf was too good to miss. Brett thought it was Christmas and dropped in blatantly and regularly. Even his daughter got in on it, carefully cutting me out of the video footage by focussing on Brett as he cut me off yet again. Bl#@! goatboaters...

THE EDGE and Waveski.info 2008 NZ Waveski Open

A classy lineup of competitors from all around NZ attended the event in Gisborne over the Easter long weekend. They came from Christchurch, Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, Gisborne and Australia. Even visiting waveski surfer, Bruce Morse from Maui, Hawaii, dropped by to catch the action.

This event had some great aspects for a waveski comp. The vibe was friendly and easy going with the competitors all just enjoying the friendly Gisborne atmosphere.

The event was well supported by Surfing New Zealand’s provision of their top contest director and operations manager complete with computer tabulation facilities and printer. A “Second Chance - Single Elimination” format was well received by all competitors and allowed each to surf at least twice before facing the prospect of elimination...

2008 South African Titles; Koeel Bay Cape Town

Malan Calitz won both the South African Waveski Open and the Closed which ran concurrently over 20/03/08 to 23/03/08 at Koeel Bay in clean perfect 4 to 5 ft waves over the easter weekend. Pushed hard by Andre Burger (2nd place) in the open, Malan showed his experience to outsurf Andre in the closely contested final.Burger pulled some amazing airs and barrel roles, but Malan held his composure with lenght of ride , radical cutbacks and plenty of off the lips.

Shaken – Not Stirred (...well…only a little…..ok……. A lot !)

Well it was a wild ride that I don’t care to experience again anytime soon. 24 hours previously, things were certainly not as calm as they were at the time of writing this.

I was at a family gathering of about 20 relatives celebrating an early xmas dinner with another relative who was visiting from OZ.

At first, the house we were in began to rock gently. Past experience quickly told us that we were feeling a slight earth tremor. Having sat through a couple of gentle tremors over the past couple of years (up to 4.2 on the Richter scale) the anxiety didn’t really kick in. I was comfortable sitting on the couch and thought “no biggie, we’ll just ride this one out like the others and nervously laugh about it later with the kids!”
